A dead fetus was found in the bathroom of an American Airlines plane that had left Charlotte for LaGuardia Airport, according to the medical examiner's office in New York.

Flight AA 1942 landed in New York from Charlotte Monday night, and the cleaning crew discovered the fetus at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials from the state medical examiner’s office spent several hours investigating the scene on the aircraft.

“The OCME can confirm we’re investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane,” the medical examiner’s office said in a statement. “We will release determination when investigation is complete.”

The plane was held at Terminal B of LaGuardia Airport, causing some delays, but was then transferred to an American Airlines hangar later that morning.

An American Airlines spokesperson released the following statement:

“As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation.”

There were no reported incidents on the plane Monday night, according to WABC. WBTVreported that police are reviewing surveillance video to try and identify the woman who the fetus belonged to.
