Obama Pushing Tax Credits In Charlotte

Tasnim Shamma

President Obama will visit Charlotte on Wednesday as part of a tax week push for two policies in his proposed budget. He is specifically targeting his message to working women.

The president has proposed expanding two tax credits that primarily affect lower- and middle-income families—the child care and earned income tax credits. He’ll try to tie those policies specifically to working women.

In Charlotte, he’ll meet at a town hall-style event with women in blogging and social media. Lisa Stone, co-founder of the site BlogHer, will moderate. Stone says the audience won’t be constrained to the budget proposals.

“They will ask their questions themselves, if they’re called upon either by me or President Obama,” says Stone, the chief community officer for BlogHer's parent company, SheKnows Media. “These questions will not be vetted in advance; they will not be known in advance.”

Stone thinks the questions will focus more on workplace issues such as equal pay, flexible time and maternity leave. The president’s call for the tax credits comes as Democrats look to make income inequality a campaign issue, and as House Republicans plan to vote to repeal the estate tax this week.
