Updated at 3:34 p.m.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has two transverse fractures in his lower back, but no further injuries after a car accident this afternoon, according to the Carolina Panthers.

CMPD says the two-car accident happened at about 12:30 p.m. on the South Church Street bridge uptown.

Newton and the driver of the other car were both taken to the hospital. CMPD says neither has life-threatening injuries. News photographs showed Newton’s truck on its side.

The Panthers issued the following statement:

"Cam Newton is in fair condition and undergoing tests at Carolinas Medical Center and will remain there overnight for observation."

Newton was photographed smiling after the accident as he propped himself up on an arm.
