Police Arrest Caretaker After Teen Drowns In Bathtub

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they have arrested a caretaker after a 17-year-old girl with mental and physical disabilities drowned in a bathtub in the University City area Friday.

Nikiya Meeks, 41, was charged with patient abuse involving culpably negligent conduct in the case. She was a paid caregiver and the 17-year-old girl, who was not named, lived at the same residence in the 9200 block of Ligon Court.

Police said they received a call at 1:08 p.m. Friday for assistance, and found the girl in the bathtub. CPR was performed on her, and she was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:03 p.m.
