Police say a 19-year-old woman died one day after being shot in traffic in west Charlotte.

Brianna Stephenson died Monday at Atrium Health, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Her death is the 17th homicide reported in Charlotte this year.

Police say Stephenson and an 18-year-old man were in a car at the intersection of Tuckaseegee Road and Freedom Drive about 11:30 a.m. Sunday when someone drove up and opened fire. The vehicle where the shots came from drove away.

Stephenson and the man in the car were both taken to a hospital. Police say the man is expected to survive.

As of Tuesday, CMPD hadn't released any information about what might have led to the shooting.

Last year, Charlotte had 107 homicides – the highest number since 1993 when the city was about half as populous — and an overall 11.5% increase in violent crime. For comparison, by this point in 2019, there had been 21 homicides.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are asking anyone with information on the cases to call 704-432-8477.
