Updated 4:45 p.m. Sunday

Police say a woman was shot and killed early Sunday morning in south Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to the 8200 block of Riverbirch Drive just after 4:45 a.m. There, they found 20-year-old Shandiin Sanchez lying on the ground near an apartment.

Sanchez had been shot. She died at the scene.

Sanchez's slaying marks the 91st homicide reported by CMPD this year. There were 58 homicides in all of 2018. There haven't been this many killings in a single year in Charlotte since the mid-1990s. The deadliest year in the city was 1993, when 129 homicides were reported – but Charlotte's population was much smaller then – about 450,000 compared to about 870,000 today.

Just two days before Sunday's slaying, 25-year-old Tydarrien Ford was shot to death in a car in North Charlotte.

CMPD is asking anyone with information that can help detectives solve homicide cases to call 704-432-8477.
