Queens University of Charlotte Friday announced a new scholarship program designed to help the class of 2020 and entice students who may be rethinking their college choices.
"The Queens Commitment promises any admitted student graduating from a Mecklenburg County school a minimum $10,000 annual scholarship to attend Queens this fall and renewable for up to three years on campus," said university President Daniel Lugo.
That offer includes Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, private and charter schools – and students graduating from Central Piedmont Community College who want to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Tuition at Queens will be about $36,000 next year, according to Jennifer Johnson, vice president for enrollment. Lugo and CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston said the scholarship plan was in the works but was accelerated because the coronavirus pandemic is putting strains on students.
It’s also creating uncertainties for universities, as students are unable to make campus visits and schools don’t know whether fall semester will be in person or online. Queens is extending its deadline for putting down a deposit by a month, to June 1, in hopes that some students who are changing plans will choose Queens.
Johnson said Mecklenburg residents made up 17% of this year's freshman class.
