Report: Charlotte, Mecklenburg County Offered More Than $270 Million For Amazon's HQ2

The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County were prepared to offer Amazon a total of $270.6 million in the bid for the company’s second headquarters, according to reporting by the Charlotte Observer.

That offer included more than $100 million from the city and more than $170 million from the county to be paid over 15 years, the Observer reports. On top of the local offer, the state would have given the tech giant over $2 billion in incentives to build in North Carolina.

According to the Observer, it would have been the largest combined offer to come from the city, county and state — but it wasn’t enough. When Amazon released its final list of cities that it was considering for its second headquarters, the Queen City wasn’t on it.

In November, the company announced its decision, picking New York City and northern Virginia — near Washington D.C. — for its second headquarters.

Charlotte wasn’t the only North Carolina city placing a bid. According to the News and Observer, Raleigh would have offered the company up to $277 million for HQ2. Like Charlotte, it would have been the city’s largest-ever incentive package, the News and Observer said.
