Report: Suicides Increased Nationwide

Jun 21, 2019

A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report says suicides overall in the U.S. have increased by 30 percent since 2000.

There is a particular concern about those in the 15 to 19 age group. Suicides among them has gone from 8 per one thousand individuals to almost 12 per one thousand. CDC officials say most of that increase occurred between 2007 and 2017.

The report attributes the rise in suicides to increased social media use, anxiety and depression.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials have increased mental health specialists in schools but they are still far from meeting national recommendations. North Carolina’s most recent health report card found that one in 10 North Carolina high school students have attempted suicide.
