The Lanesboro Correctional Institution is currently on lockdown after a stabbing that injured two inmates and a correctional officer Thursday morning.
An inmate assaulted another inmate around 8:30 a.m., according to a statementreleased by Director of Prisons Kenneth Lassiter. When correctional officers responded to the situation, one of the inmates assaulted one of the officers.
The officer and the inmates involved were taken to outside medical facilities with injuries that were not life-threatening, Lassiter said.
He also said the prison will seek assault charges on the inmate who started the incident.
The stabbing follows an announcement that the prison – located about 40 miles southeast of Charlotte – will be converted into a female facility, in an effort to improve safety and security. Two other prisons that currently hold women will be converted to maximum security prisons for men.
