Public Conversations is an ongoing series of community forums designed to convene Charlotte-area residents for discussion of timely and relevant topics. Our goal is to create comfortable settings that encourage a stimulating and enlightening exchange of ideas. By organizing these Public Conversations, WFAE intends to serve as a catalyst for community dialogue. Participants are encouraged to engage in conversation with a cross-section of community representatives, expert panelists, and with each other.

The State Of Public Education

September is here, and I’ve been hearing those big yellow school buses making their early morning rounds in my neighborhood.

September also means that WFAE’s Public Conversation on the state of public education in the Charlotte area is getting close. The event is Tuesday evening, Sept. 16, at UNC Charlotte Center City and I’m excited about the excellent panel of educators and education experts who have agreed to join us: Dr. Heath Morrison, Superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools; Torrieann Dooley, Teacher at David Cox Road Elementary; Tiffany Flowers, Executive Director of KIPP Charlotte; and Eric Guckian, Senior Education Advisor to N.C. Governor Pat McCrory.

WFAE reporter Tom Bullock will moderate this community forum. He and I have been brainstorming and we’d love to hear from you about the public education issues that you think are most important to address. Feel free to comment below or send your ideas to publicconversations@wfae.org

From student achievement and teacher pay, to charter schools and the Common Core, the possibilities for an informative and lively discussion abound. The best part is, you can participate in the conversation.  WFAE’s Public Conversations are built around audience involvement, so come prepared to consider taking a turn at our roving microphones.

Enjoy these closing days of summer, and please make room on your calendar to join us for this community discussion on Tuesday evening, Sept. 16 at UNC-Charlotte’s Center City Auditorium. You can register to attend here.
