Students will return to Butler High School Thursday.

Students will return to classes Thursday at Butler High School.

School was canceled Tuesday after 16-year-old Bobby McKeithen was shot and killed by Jatwan Cuffie, also 16, around 7:15 a.m. Monday in a hallway on Butler’s campus. Schools were then closed district-wide for a teacher workday Wednesday.

Monday’s fatal shooting occurred after a fight broke out between the two students. CMS officials have said the fight was a case of bullying that spiraled out of control and ended with a gunshot.

CMS Superintendent Clayton Wilcox noted dozens of students witnessed the shooting.

“It’s fair to say more lives than the two changed forever,” Wilcox said in a news conference Monday afternoon.

CMS said counselors will be made available to students as they return to Butler High. There will also be additional security on campus. CMS said midterm exams have been rescheduled, and the school has planned assemblies to provide support and resources for students and staff.
