ANSWER FOR HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES: ALUMNI GIVING?

Financial troubles at the historically black South Carolina State University have been in the news in recent weeks. It’s not alone - historically black colleges nationwide are struggling to survive amid sharp drops in enrollment and revenue. Advocates say more alumni donations may be the best answer for their futures.  SC State’s endowment is less than 5 million dollars, a tiny sum compared, for example, to the 600 million dollar endowment at the University of South Carolina. Lew Berry, a 1966 graduate, said the school’s biggest problem has been its revolving door of presidents over the past three decades. He's "disappointed" by his status as the school's most prolific donor.  South Carolina State is seeking a commitment of $2 million from alumni over the next three years.
