Sword-Wielding Man Shot, Killed By Officers In Mount Holly

Police in Mount Holly say a man with a sword was shot and killed by an officer early Saturday after he set a fire in an upstairs bedroom, jumped out a second-story window and attempted to escape.

Police say officers answered the domestic disturbance call shortly before 7 a.m. When officers got there, police say, a fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom. Media outlets reported that a man jumped from a window, carrying a sword.

Mount Holly Police Chief Don Roper said at a news conference Saturday there was “contact” between officers “during which the subject was shot and killed by police.”

Police have not released the name of the man who was killed or the officers involved. The Gaston Gazette reports that the man did not live at the residence, but was believed to be related to the couple that lived there.

The Mount Holly Fire Department put out the fire, and Gaston County Police and the State Bureau of Investigation are also looking into the incident.
