A police officer showed up at a Denny’s in Shelby last weekend after a man called complaining that a transgender woman used the same bathroom as his wife. An officer told the patron David Short that the 22-year-old transgender woman broke no law.
However, according to the Shelby Star, police ended up arresting the woman’s companion, Michael Lloyd, who identifies as a woman.
During the incident, Lloyd allegedly cursed and spat in the direction of Short and his wife. She was charged with disorderly conduct. The restaurant chain Denny’s has released a statement saying "it does not tolerate discrimination of any kind" and expects customers to treat people equally.
Correction: In an earlier version of this story, the Associated Press incorrectly reported the transgender woman who used the bathroom was arrested.
