http://66.225.205.104/CT20120601.mp3

Update on Forced Sterilization and Eugenics in North Carolina North Carolina is on the verge of becoming the first state in the nation to financially compensate victims of state-sponsored sterilization. More than half of states in the US had eugenics programs, but North Carolina's lasted into the mid-70s. The details of this dark chapter in our history were rarely discussed until a decade ago when reporters at the Winston Salem Journal uncovered long-forgotten documents and published an explosive series that shocked readers and state officials alike. We'll meet the authors of that series, along with a victim of the program and one lawmaker who is working to make sure the victims are compensated. Victims needing assistance can reach the Sterilization Victims Foundation through: toll-free hotline number 1-877-550-6013 and website sterilizationvictims.nc.gov Guests Scott Sexton - Columnist at the Winston-Salem Journal John Railey - Editorial Page Editor of the Winston-Salem Journal and co-author of Against Their Will: North Carolina's Sterilization Program Elaine Riddick - Victim of the North Carolina Eugenics Program, who was sterilized at the age of 14 Rep. Thom Tillis - Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives Credit: American Philosophical Society. The American Eugenics Society promoted ideas of racial betterment and genetic education through public lectures, conferences, publications and exhibits at county and state fairs - like this chart labeled The Triangle of Life from the Kansas Free Fair.
