Camp: Homesick And Happy

Summer is here and the kids are out of school. But instead of sitting around watching TV and playing on their iPhones, some parents will be sending their kids to summer camp - to hike and canoe their way around the outdoors, learn new skills and make lasting friendships. Michael Thompson, author of Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow says camp provides essential experiences for children. What he calls the "magic of camp" allows kids to mature and develop in a unique atmosphere away from school and home - teaching independence and values. But where does camp fit in an age of helicopter parents - where kids are rarely out of the sight of their folks? We'll explore the magic of camp and find out why kids need time away from home.
