Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave who became a major leader in the abolitionist movement and then one of the most noted intellectuals of his time, known especially for his oratory talents.
Yale Professor of History David Blight has written a comprehensive new biography about Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, that one reviewer says “brilliantly illustrates both the perils and possibilities of our national history through a rich and humane portrait of a man and his times”.
Professor Blight was in town last week to speak about the book at Davidson College and he joined guest host Erik Spanberg for a conversation about Douglass’ life.
