The true crime genre has seen a resurgence in recent years, but Charlotte has its share of notorious crimes throughout its history. Some of them have been national headlines, while others have faded from memory.
For long time Charlotteans, some of the crimes are well-known: serial killer Henry Louis Wallace; the murder trial of former Panther Rae Carruth, the still-unsolved 1990 slaying of women's rights activist Kim Thomas, the PTL scandal.
But there are forgotten stories, such as that of Nellie Freeman, a young woman whose 1926 trial for the murder of her husband created a media frenzy with headlines about 'Razor Girl.'

Cathy Pickens, who has worn many hats in her career, from college professor and provost to Southern mystery writer, dives into Charlotte's true crime past and present in her latest book.
