Atrium Health

One of two major health care systems in the Charlotte area, formerly known as Carolinas HealthCare System. Atrium first opened doors as Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1940. The system's network now includes more than 40 hospitals and 900 care locations, ranging from doctors' offices to behavorial health centers and nursing homes.

In 2018, Carolinas HealthCare System changed its name to Atrium Health.

At least 151 employees of Atrium Health’s previous anesthesiology provider are at risk of being laid off. This comes after a long, bitter public battle between the health system and the doctors' group.

Atrium Health says it plans to spend about $1 billion to expand its health care facilities in the Charlotte region and beyond. But it’s not quite clear exactly what will be built, where the money will come from for these new projects, and what Atrium defines as beyond.

The group of nearly 90 doctors leaving Atrium Health is rebranding itself as the Tryon Medical Partners. Formerly part of the Mecklenburg Medical Group, Tryon Medical Partners split with Atrium after it sued the hospital network in a challenge to Atrium's non-compete agreements so its doctors could practice independently.

A judge has denied the request of former Atrium Health anesthesiology provider Mednax for a temporary restraining order to force the hospital system to keep its anesthesiologists working at its facilities.

The anesthesiology provider that lost its contract to Atrium Health is trying to stop the new hospital network’s contractor from hiring its physicians. This is just the latest action in a public battle between the health system and the doctors group.

Atrium Health says an ad campaign by its former anesthesiology contractor is causing it to lose patients. The health system added this new allegation to its lawsuit against Mednax, which still employs doctors that work at Atrium through the end of June.

Doctors trying to separate from Atrium Health say the health care system is intentionally misleading patients to have them stay in the system, instead of following their doctors. They filed a complaint with the North Carolina Medical Board Monday. It alleges Atrium is violating board directives and intentionally interfering with patient choice.

The group of physicians that sued Atrium Health to void their non-compete agreements and operate independently hasn’t received confirmation from the health system that it will allow for the group to leave despite public statements saying otherwise.

Atrium Health's chief executive Gene Woods told employees not to let the media noise distract them from serving patients amid an escalating dispute over its choice of an anesthesiology provider and a suit by a group of physicians to operate independently.

With billboards, petitions, a website and ads, anesthesiologists have made an employment debate with Atrium Health public. Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants is crying foul over Atrium’s decision to select a new provider, owned by a former Atrium consultant. In response, Atrium is accusing the company of defaming the hospital.

After more than 90 doctors sued Atrium Health to be released from their employment agreements and be free of their non-compete clauses, the health system announced it had relented and will allow the doctors to operate independently.

Atrium Health said its contract with a new anesthesiology provider will help patients save money and pushed back on claims that it unfairly dumped its old provider.

The fallout of Atrium's decision to end its nearly 40-year relationship with Southeast Anesthesiology Consultants and its parent company Mednax has spurred charges that the new company intends to reduce the number of doctors it utilizes — a claim that the new company taking over and Atrium denies.

Atrium Health, formerly Carolinas HealthCare System, said it ended its contract with the anesthesiology group that’s been providing care at its hospitals and clinics for nearly four decades. At the heart of this, is a dispute over how many patients anesthesiologists should be caring for simultaneously.
