A fiery state lawmaker from Mecklenburg County is retiring after next year. Republican Senator Bob Rucho of Matthews has represented the area off and on since 1996. When the GOP gained control of the legislature after the 2010 election, Rucho played a significant role in some of the state's major legislative changes. WFAE's Michael Tomsic sat down with him Tuesday and filed this report.

Wednesday, the North Carolina Senate tentative approved its $21.5 billion state budget. The final vote will take place Thursday.

The budget vote was largely party line, but there was a surprise. A key Republican budget writer voted against the plan.

American Airlines Group

American Airlines announced their first quarter profits Friday. And they were a record $932 million. It’s great news for the airline and their stockholders and certainly noted by North Carolina lawmakers. 

The state's congressional district boundaries have since been redrawn, which has reshaped the 1st and 12th districts.

Four years after state lawmakers redrew North Carolina's legislative districts, it's still unclear whether those districts are constitutional. The U.S. Supreme Court Monday tossed out the North Carolina Supreme Court's ruling in December that upheld the redistricting. The nation's highest court is ordering the state court to reconsider the case in light of a similar Alabama case it recently decided.
