Catawba County passed a resolution Tuesday making it a "Second Amendment sanctuary" county, while Cabarrus County unanimously approved support of its own resolution that would do the same.

A growing number of North Carolina counties are becoming so-called Second Amendment sanctuaries, including several in the Charlotte region.


Just over 200 of North Carolina's 2,500 public schools earned A's from the state this year, and about half as many received an F.

Corning Inc. has signed up to be the first tenant in a new business park being built in southeast Hickory. The company and local officials announced plans Tuesday for a $60 million plant to make cable for its Optical Communications division, creating up to 110 jobs.

A Smithsonian art exhibit is touring the state this year, and it opens in Newton Friday. “The Way We Worked” documents how Americans have worked over the past 150 years, and the nation’s transition to a post-industrial economy. The exhibit has been shown across the country, but this time it features a section specific to Catawba County.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office says it has apprehended a man they say is connected with a deadly shooting late last night in Conover.

You may soon be able to buy alcohol before noon on Sundays in Mecklenburg County. A new law now allows that, but it’s up to local governments to opt in. Leaders in Charlotte are moving quickly to make the change. 

Charlotte Councilman Kenny Smith has an August 13 deadline.

“The PGA championship is what I’m eyeing just because we’re going to have tens of thousands of people here and I hope they can have the complete brunch experience on championship Sunday,” Smith says.

Corning will expand its optical fiber plant in Midland, in Cabarrus County.

Corning Inc. says strong demand for optical fiber and cable is bringing another expansion in North Carolina. The company said Monday it will spend $176 million in Catawba and Cabarrus counties and create 410 jobs over the next two years.
