In January, big changes will start to take place in Hickory. Construction on a long-awaited "City Walk" will begin four years after citizens approved a $40 million bond referendum to improve city infrastructure with the hope of attracting jobs.

The city of Hickory is hoping to expand its Oakwood National Register Historic District north of downtown after an architectural survey identified more parts of the neighborhood as eligible for historic status.

Several communities in western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina are cleaning up from severe storms that swept across the region on Monday afternoon, as National Weather Service crews investigate several possible tornado touchdowns.

For 16 years, the city of Hickory had one mayor.

"This city loved Rudy Wright," Cline says.  "He had a lot of friends.  Just a fine man and also a fine mayor."
