Affordable housing efforts across the Charlotte region often focus on building new homes. But the city of Charlotte and surrounding towns increasingly are working to preserve existing housing so it's not lost to gentrification. Habitat for Humanity chapters are partners, through Critical Home Repair programs, that are shifting the organization's focus away from home building and toward repairs.

Construction began Friday – Flag Day - on the first Habitat Charlotte home built by veterans for a veteran.  They're racing to finish within 2 ½ weeks, so the home can be dedicated on the eve of Independence Day.  WFAE spoke with some of the participants at Friday's kick-off.

New Goal For CMS Seniors: Build A House

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system gave its seniors a new goal Wednesday to accomplish before graduating– build three houses. CMS is partnering with Habitat for Humanity to encourage students to get their hands dirty.

Hard hats, tool belts and wooden boards were set up in front of the bookshelves in Independence High School's library as CMS Superintendent Heath Morrison announced the partnership, called Senior Buildup.

Morrison said it's all about giving students a well-rounded education.

Charlotte had its fair share of new buildings before the Democratic National Convention, but only one was constructed during the convention. Over four days, Habitat for Humanity built a LEED Platinum certified home in the center city to demonstrate the city's sustainability projects. The house will be moved to the Reid Park Community in West Charlotte at the weeks end.
