With a loud whir and a whoosh, a fixed-wing drone slingshots out of a medical warehouse, zips through hazy skies at 80 mph, pops open a belly hatch and drops a box of medical supplies. Slowed by a little parachute, the box drifts downward and lands with a plop, less than 8 minutes after launch.

Atrium and Novant health systems now say that a field hospital is not needed in Charlotte, as social distancing measures in Mecklenburg County have helped slow a projected surge of coronavirus patients.

A new option for pain relief in labor is gaining popularity in the United States -- nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. At least five Charlotte-area hospitals now offer it during childbirth.

Charlotte’s two largest hospital systems are battling over who can add more patient beds. Atrium and Novant argued their cases Monday in a state health department hearing.

Bank of America employees got some good news this week. For a third year, the bank is handing out an extra bonus – and it isn’t chump change. That means there’ll be more cash floating around Charlotte this holiday season.

For the more than 40 doctors at Lakeside Family Physicians and Huntersville OB/GYN, the move away from Novant Health is a return to how they used to practice medicine. Both groups were independent before joining with Novant about 15 years ago.

The 41 doctors leaving Novant Health for an independent practice won't remain in some of their offices as Novant previously said. In January, the doctors announced they were leaving the health system to join the multi-state practice Holston Medical Group.

Starting Friday at 7 a.m., many hospitals in the region are restricting access for visitors under the age of 12 as flu cases go up.

Atrium Health and Novant Health, as well as Wake Forest Baptist in Winston Salem, Cone Health in Greensboro and Randolph Health in Asheboro, are all implementing the restriction at the same time in order to avoid confusion.

The physicians leaving Novant Health say they're joining a private practice with a similar 'patient-first philosophy' to their own. The now 42 doctors leaving include the founder of  Lakeside Family Physicians Dr. David Cook as well as several doctors from Huntersville OB/GYN.

Novant Health released details about the 41 physicians leaving the health system. Doctors from Lakeside Family Physicians and Huntersville OB/GYN will be leaving Novant to join Tenessee based Holston Medical Group. Not all doctors from the practices will be leaving, some will remain with Novant.

A group of more than 40 doctors is planning to leave Novant Health.

Few details have been provided, but a Novant Health spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday that the system is in the process of revising its business relationship with 41 doctors who are leaving the medical group.

Novant Health wants to build a new 36-bed hospital in Ballantyne. If approved by state regulators, the 161,000 square foot hospital would open by 2023. Novant Health has multiple doctors’ offices in the area already. Atrium Health, the other major health system in the Charlotte market has multiple facilities in the area as well.

More than 600 people have died from flu-related illnesses in the Carolinas, according to state health department reports. The flu season officially runs through the end of May.

Two of the biggest health care systems in the Charlotte area started sharing patient records Wednesday. The partnership between Carolinas HealthCare System and Novant Health will include about nine million patients.

Novant Health on Monday reported net income of $412.8 million in 2016, up nearly 60 percent from the year before. The health care system said the boost came from a combination of higher day-to-day operating income and $151 million in investment income.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper wants to increase state government spending next year by more than 5 percent, or $1.1 billion, and to issue about $350 million in new debt to renovate state buildings.

CMS officials say four schools in the district were placed on lockdown Friday in reaction to a student walk out at Garinger High School.

According to CMS, the protest began during Garinger's first period, when approximately 500 students staged a peaceful demonstration in opposition to recent immigration policies. Most of the students returned to class when the second period bell rang, but CMS says 100 students instead walked off campus, prompting neighboring Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School to go on lockdown for about an hour.

There is a particular conversation that almost no family can avoid and that doctors agree is incredibly important. Yet, most of us don’t have this conversation. It’s about the medical care we would want if we were dying.

To get the obvious out of the way: this can be an immensely difficult conversation. But it doesn't have to be.

“In my experience, they tend to go pretty well; I actually enjoy having those conversations with patients,” Daniel Miles says. He’s assistant director of the chaplain department at Carolinas Medical Center's main campus.

Novant Health and Carolinas HealthCare System are running out of room at two of their hospitals in Mecklenburg County, so both systems are asking the state if they can add more inpatient beds. The state is holding a public hearing on that Tuesday morning.

There was a chance this year, that for the first time in 67 years, Charlotte would not have a Thanksgiving Day Parade. Once Belk stepped down as the main sponsor, organizers said they were unable to raise the money to keep the parade afloat. But a few weeks later, Novant Health stepped in and committed to be the title sponsor for three years and the parade was back on.

WFAE's Tasnim Shamma joined workers as they put last minute touches on the floats before the big day.

At a parking lot in uptown, there's a row of white tents where a 15-foot turkey will be inflated.
