Voting Booth Art Blooms in Bloomington

During a recent meeting of a non-profit alliance in Bloomington, Ind., the discussion turned to the low voting rates among people served by the groups in attendance.

Toby Strout, executive director of Middle Way House -- a domestic violence prevention non-profit -- thought that a public art project might help boost turnout for the coming election.

Bloomington artist Lara Weaver took up the challenge and enlisted artists to decorate 20 plywood voting booths. The booths were built with materials and labor donated by a local carpenters' union.

NPR's Linda Wertheimer talks to Weaver about the booths, which will line the streets of downtown Bloomington through Nov. 2.
