Quick Picks: Tasty Gifts For Your Last-Minute List

Candy canes

It's going to be O.K. Everyone forgets a gift or two. Here's a handful of locally-made delectables that are easy to find and nice to share at holiday gatherings.

Each year, the Piedmont Candy Company makes and ships millions of mints under their Red Bird label. The puffs are pillow-y and perfect. The sticks are fun to use as stirrers in hot chocolate or cocktails. Kids who grew up in the Carolinas may remember this trick: cut an "X" into an orange, insert the peppermint stick, and sip the juice from this "citrus sucker." Retail outlets are plentiful; visit their website for the closest one.

With countless products making their way to market every year, dark chocolate sunflower granola from The Bungalow Picnic Company is a literal winner. It received a Best New Product 2015 award from an industry publication. It's available at health-focused food stores and the "local" shelf of Charlotte's best-known chain grocery.

The Community Culinary School of Charlotte recently received $20,000 from Tom's of Maine for the workforce development training program that's "a creative solution to the interwoven problems of unemployment, hunger and homelessness in the community." Check out the menus and schedules for their café -- but in the meantime, pick up some cheddar-pecan wafers.

When you're shopping at SouthPark mall, stop by Nordstrom's eBar and grab some ready-to-bake, sweet or savory scones -- hand-made locally by The Scone Shop. Our favorite is butterscotch chocolate chip. They're also available at area specialty grocers.

Too busy to stop and shop? Tasha's Tasty Treats can meet you to personally deliver chocolate-enrobed Oreo cookies, or hot chocolate mix cleverly packaged in a reusable Christmas ornament.

Even if you're running out of time, you won't have to worry about running out of good taste. Happy holidays!
