Carl Kasell, long-time NPR newscaster and Wait, Wait... Don't Tell Me! official scorekeeper, has died at the age of 84, NPR reports

Back in 2005, Kasell joined Mike Collins on WFAE's Charlotte Talks to share stories about his early life growing up in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and his career in radio.

While talking about their radio careers, Mike wondered why Carl woke up so early.

"I get up at 1 o'clock now. Actually, I get up at 1:10," Carl said. "Now, you ask me why I get up at 1:10."   "Why do you get up at 1:10?" Mike asked.    "I like to sleep late," Carl deadpanned.

Carl retired from NPR's newscast unit in 2009, but continued his weekly role on Wait, Wait until 2014.
