Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are reporting that the officer who was shot in an incident this morning is recovering and will be released from the hospital. The officer was shot in the leg early this morning in the NoDa neighborhood. The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. when police say they were responding to reports of a disturbance at the Blind Pig bar on 36th Street when a customer was asked to leave.
In a message via social media, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings addressed his concerns about local police being shot at in the line of duty.
"Thankfully, our Officer who was shot this morning in NoDa is doing well and will be released from the hospital today," Jennings said. "This marks the 3rd incident in a week where CMPD officers have faced gunfire during a call for service. It's a disturbing trend that our men and women in uniform are being fired at while doing their jobs, and it’s not just in Charlotte where this is happening."
Earlier in the morning, Jennings spoke with reporters about what happened.
“As officers were investigating the incident and looking around the building, the facility, at least one shot was fired. An officer was struck in the leg as a result of that and transported to the hospital where the officer is in stable condition.”
No arrests have been made and Jennings says preliminary indications are that no officers returned fire.
