Forty years ago today, in Memphis, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. In 1960, King inspired a 23-year old student at Johnson C. Smith University to ignite the civil rights movement in Charlotte. Charles Jones organized the first lunch counter sit-ins in the Queen City and went on to become one of Dr. King's close advisors. He shared his recollections with WFAE's Julie Rose.
