Once the Supreme Court mandated Charlotte integrate its schools in 1971, this city became a national leader in that effort. This was largely accomplished through busing to correct geographical imbalances. But since that time, the school system has largely re-segregated by race and class to pre-1971 levels. We look at why this has happened, what can be done to change it and what re-segregation has meant to the city and the system.
