The tragic shooting at a church in Charleston set off a nationwide conversation about the meanings of symbols of the Confederacy including memorials. Some of those memorials have been defaced in the wake of that shooting and recently Governor McCrory signed legislation that would ban the removal of civil war era monuments without approval. How many such monuments are there? Who put them there, when and why and what do they really mean today? We explore that.
