Mayor Jennifer Roberts sums up her tenure on her last day in office, and her successor, Vi Lyles, looks ahead to her swearing-in.

It could be argued that no mayor in recent Charlotte history has faced the storms that confronted Jennifer Roberts – storms that kept Charlotte in the national spotlight for much of her first year in office.

The House Bill 2 controversy and the response to the fatal police shooting of Keith Scott dominated her term, which draws to a close Monday.

Roberts has no regretsabout the decisions made and actions taken during her turbulent tenure, and says she’s “proud” to have taken “bullets for a lot of people in the community.”

She turns the office over to Vi Lyles, the first African-American female to be elected mayor. A veteran of city government, Lyles defeated Roberts in September's Democratic primary and handily defeated Kenny Smith in the general election.

The incoming and outgoing mayors join Mike Collins for a look at where Charlotte has been, and where it's going.
