Five bicyclists in Charlotte were arrested for reckless driving, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police announced Tuesday.
Police said in a tweet that the five cyclists' ages are 39, 29, 19, 17 and 15, adding that "this is the 2nd time the 15-year-old was arrested for driving recklessly and disrupting motorists."
The 17-year-old faces an additional charge of resisting arrest. A parent of the 15-year-old was cited for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to CMPD.
Police also confiscated the five bicycles.
The department tweeted that the group "rides in a pack while doing wheelies, failing to obey traffic lights, riding on sidewalks, riding the wrong way in traffic, playing chicken with motorists, and other traffic violations."
Police said bicycle groups riding recklessly in Uptown and in Charlotte as a whole continues to be a problem.
"Our officers will continue proactive patrols to hold these individuals accountable for their actions, seizing bicycles and in some instances, firearms," CMPD said.
On March 31, four juvenile cyclists “riding erratically” were arrested in Charlotte after a driver accused them of assault and car theft, according to The Charlotte Observer.
According to a police report obtained by the newspaper, the car hit the cyclists, and the driver was attacked by the juveniles after exiting the car.
One month later, a different group fled on bikes after a man was shot in the spine, The Observer reported.
