Missionary David Writebol has completed his 21 day quarantine for possible exposure to the Ebola virus. And Sunday he visited his wife Nancy Writebol who is being treated for Ebola and Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
The Writebol's were working with Charlotte based charity group SIM International in Liberia, a small West African nation hit hard by the ongoing Ebola outbreak.
In a statement released by SIM, David Writebol said of his reunion, "I have had the great joy to be able to look through the isolation room glass and see my beautiful wife again." He added she is continuing to slowly gain strength.
Bidding War For Family Dollar A Possibility
There's now a potential bidding war for Matthews-based Family Dollar. Rival Dollar General today offered about $9.7 billion for the chain in an effort to trump Dollar Tree's bid last month for the company.
Dollar General has offered to pay $78.50 per share in cash, 5 percent higher than Dollar Tree’s offer. Dollar Tree last month made an $8.5 billion bid for Family Dollar, a deal Family Dollar approved.
NC'S Unemployment Rate Up Slightly
North Carolina's unemployment rate last month was 6.5 percent, up slightly from June but down more than 1.6 percent from July last year. The rate is slightly higher than the 6.2 percent national unemployment rate last month.
In South Carolina last month, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. That’s up from June, but down from July last year by about 2 percent.
SC House Speaker's Ethics Investigation Ends Without Indictments
South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell says the state grand jury's investigation into ethics allegations against him has ended without indictments.
Harrell’s office also says state Attorney General Alan Wilson has removed himself from the case and passed responsibility to David Pascoe, the chief prosecutor for Calhoun, Dorchester and Orangeburg counties. Harrell says the grand jury's probe expired June 30. Days later, the state Supreme Court ruled Wilson had the authority to initiate an investigation into the speaker, who is accused of using is his office for personal gain.
The state Supreme Court’s decision overturned a lower ruling that a legislative panel must first consider an ethics complaint against a lawmaker. Harrell says his attorney wasn't notified of Wilson's decision to remove himself from the case until July 29.
Charlotte Man Faces Over 20 Charges In Weekend Shooting
A Charlotte man faces more than 20 charges after a young girl, and two police officers responding to a domestic shooting over the weekend were injured. 27-year-old Brandon Brewer is charged with attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and a number of weapons-related charges.
The CMPD says a woman called 911 Sunday and said her boyfriend tried to attack her. The department says one of its officers was shot in the leg and arm and the other in the face and elbow after responding to the incident. Chief Rodney Monroe says the injuries were slight.
Police say a 10 year-old girl was also wounded after the suspect fired a shotgun into the girl’s home.
Both officers and the girl are reported to be in good condition
Canadian Manufacturing Facility To Open In Scotland County
A Canadian packaging and tissue company plans to open manufacturing facility in Scotland County and create 68 jobs. Cascades Tissue Group says it will invest $62 million over the next three years into the facility. The company currently has operations in Kinston and Rockingham.
