WFAE recently highlighted several podcasts in Charlotte as part of our Queen City Podquest competition. It’s made us more aware of a lot that’s going in the local podcast world. For example, the "Bruh vs. Bro" podcast produced by young brothers Dayton and Ezekiel Self. Dayton is 10. Ezekiel, or EZ, is 12.

In each episode the boys offer a joke of the week, give a vocabulary lesson, and even suggest a random act of kindness — like holding the door open for someone. The two became podcast fans early on. Dayton started listening when he was all of four years old.

"We would listen to 'Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me,'" Dayton said. "That was my favorite. And probably this one called 'The Starters,' which is a sports podcast."

Sports is one of the brothers' favorite topics. They’re highlighting a Negro League Baseball player every episode this month. EZ said part of the inspiration for the name "Bruh vs Bro" comes from the disagreements he and Dayton have over their favorite teams and players.

"Like who is the best player in the NBA," EZ said.

He’s a Kawhi Leanord man. Dayton goes for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Since beginning the podcast a little over a year ago, the brothers have picked up a few sponsors. Each pays $5 a month for a mention during an episode. All the money the boys make goes back into the podcast.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
