When a fresh faced eager young coach took over the North Carolina Tarheel basketball team in 1961, nobody knew if Dean Smith would succeed. He followed the legendary Frank McGuire and was coaching in the shadow of NC State giant Everett Case. After a losing record his first year, Coach Dean Smith went on to coach some of the greatest teams and greatest players the game has ever known, including arguably the greatest player of all time, Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan. Smith won league championships, national championships and hundreds of awards. But many people remember him just as well for the man he was off the court, the way he molded young athletes and his contributions to society. Dean Smith passed away Saturday at the age of 83. We remember his legacy.
