Review Finds Major Problems With Meck Tax Reappraisal

An independent review of Mecklenburg County's 2011 property tax reappraisal found "major" problems in neighborhoods spread across the county.

In particular, the report found unacceptable tax values assigned in older neighborhoods where property values have increased, but homes have not been rebuilt.

The independent reviewer evaluated property values in hundreds of randomly selected neighborhoods, as well as those that had the highest increase in property values during the revaluation.

Ten percent of the randomly-chosen neighborhoods and 40 percent of those with big increases in valuation were found to have major inequities in the 2011 Revaluation.  The list includes Lake Norman, Myers Park and south Charlotte neighborhoods where property owners have been particularly vocal with complaints.
