The Venus Fly Trap is known for clamping down on insects and digesting them. You probably knew that. But did you know this? The Venus Fly Trap only grows in the wild within about 90 miles of Wilmington.

Its range is shrinking. Development is one threat. And so are poachers. There have been several incidents of poaching in the last few years, and in May an estimated 1,000 Venus Flytraps were stolen from a Wilmington Park. That incident has spurred calls to make it a felony to poach the plant. It’s currently a misdemeanor. North Carolina Plant Conservation Board Chairman Mark Rose supports higher penalties.  He joined WFAE's Marshall Terry to discuss.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
