West Charlotte Band Director Accused Of Sexually Assaulting Former Student

Update: The police report indicates the former student was 13 years old when he says the sexual assault happened.

The band director at West Charlotte high school has been arrested after a former student accused him of sexual assault.

CMPD officials arrested Duncan Gray Sunday after speaking with a former band member who said Gray assaulted him several years ago as a student.  Gray is 58 and has led West Charlotte’s award-winning band since 2007. He held the same position at Johnson C. Smith University for many years before that.

CMPD began investigating early last week after CMS Police notified them a sexual assault had occurred at the school. CMPD’s press release did not say when that was.

Gray is charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student. CMS has suspended him with pay. In March 2011, the district placed Gray on administrative leave for two weeks, but did not indicate why.

Principal Timisha Barnes-Jones notified West Charlotte parents yesterday.  She said the school has counselors available for any students who want to speak with someone.
