YWCA Central Carolinas announced plans Thursday to build 104 affordable apartments on its Park Road campus in Charlotte.
The organization says it will work with the nonprofit Charlotte-Mecklenburg Housing Partnership Inc. to build the units on 3.5 acres of its 10-acre property.
The housing will be aimed at people making 30-60% percent the area median income, or between about $24,000 and $47,000 a year for a family of four. The project is expected to be completed in 2023.
A spokeswoman wasn't sure how much the project will cost. The YWCA announced a $3 million donation from the Gambrell Foundation of Charlotte to help with the project.
The YWCA already has 66 units of housing for women, as well as 10 townhomes for families on its campus, the latter developed in 2008.
“If you work in our community you should be able to live in our community, and at the YWCA, we intend to be part of the solution by building out affordable rental housing on our campus,” YWCA CEO Kirsten Sikkelee said in a press release.
Taiwo Jaiyeoba, Charlotte's assistant city manager and planning director, said in the press release: “We should all be as focused on increasing affordable housing options and improving inequities. This is the direction we are headed with our 2040 comprehensive plan – increasing the percentage of affordable housing in our neighborhoods and creating 10-minute communities where residents can walk, bike, or take transit to goods and services in proximity to where they can afford to live.”
