Resolution Says 9th District Uncertainty Harms Union County Residents

Union County commissioners will vote Monday night on a resolution calling on the State Board of Elections to certify the results in the 9th District Congressional race.

The resolution says the lack of certification is harming county residents by causing uncertainty regarding their representation in the United States House.

Board Chairman Richard Helms told WSOC if the state decides on a new election, it would cost Union County about $100,000 of taxpayer money to open polling places, set up equipment and hire poll workers.

The state board has declined to certify the results of the race between Republican Mark Harris and Democrat Dan McCready while it investigates allegations of absentee ballot fraud in Bladen and Robeson Counties. Harris leads McCready by 905 votes in unofficial results. The board of elections has pushed back its public evidentiary hearing on the investigation to Jan. 11.
