Davidson College fans cheered and players stormed the field after the final out Sunday night as the Wildcats knocked out North Carolina, 2-1, to win the first-round regional championship in the NCAA baseball tournament.

Davidson's game-winning play Sunday night came in the fifth inning, when Will Robertson hit a two-run single. Michael Busch hit a solo home run for the Tar Heels.

It was the second time in three days that Davidson (35 wins, 24 losses) beat the Tar Heels (49-14), who had been ranked No. 2 nationally.  At the regional tournament in Chapel Hill, Davidson also defeated North Carolina Friday, 8-4, and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, 2-1.

The Wildcats had never made it to the tournament before. They'll play in the next round this weekend.
