A Charlotte area high school student has won best actress at Monday night’s National High School Theatre Awards, nicknamed the Jimmy Awards, in New York.

Amina Faye, 18, was a graduating senior at Central Academy of Technology and Arts in Monroe. Last month, she won the award for best actress at the regional high school musical theater competition, the Blumey Awards.

At that ceremony, held at the Belk Theater in uptown Charlotte, and televised earlier this month by WTVI PBS Charlotte, she elicited screams and deafening cheers from the audience during her performance of “Your Daddy’s Son” from the musical Ragtime.

After winning the Blumeys, Faye moved on the Jimmy Awards, where last night, she beat out roughly 60 other students representing the best in high school talent from around the country. Faye becomes the first Charlotte area student to win a top spot in the national competition.

Faye was awarded a $10,000 college scholarship.
