Novant Health is asking state regulators to approve a $29.4 million expansion of its Matthews Medical Center in a project that includes spending $2.2 million to add an operating room and $27.2 million to add 20 beds.

Both projects would be finished in July 2023. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has scheduled a public hearing Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center to discuss the proposals.

The same hearing also will consider a series of expansion requests by Atrium Health, including a proposed $147 million, 30-bed hospital off I-77 in Cornelius. Atrium also wants to add beds or operating rooms at its hospitals in Charlotte, University City and Pineville.

In all, eight projects have been proposed by the two health systems.
