A 31-year-old Charlotte man has been charged with shooting his girlfriend to death at an apartment in southwest Charlotte early Thursday.

Police said they learned of the crime when a man drove himself to CMPD’s Steele Creek division office around 1:40 a.m. to report that he had just killed his girlfriend.

When officers went to the apartment, in the 10700 block of Point South Drive, off Carowinds Boulevard, they found 27-year-old Whitney Jo King dead of gunshot wounds inside.

An infant was also found at the apartment unharmed. The infant is now in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

Michael Duane Brown has been charged with murder. He was being held at Mecklenburg County Jail Thursday morning, awaiting a 1 p.m. appearance in court.

This is the 19th homicide reported in Charlotte in 2018.
