The state Department of Transportation is now seeking public comments on plans for intersection improvements and widening of North Carolina Highway 51, the Matthews Township Parkway in Matthews, from Sardis to Monroe Roads.

NCDOT's current plans call for widening about one mile of the road from four to six lanes, between Sardis and Monroe Roads. The NC 51 and John Street intersection also would get a major overhaul to improve traffic flow, and the intersections at Sardis Road and Fullwood Lane also would be improved.

The work also would install a raised median, bicycle lanes and improvements for pedestrians.

NCDOT will hold a public meeting on the plans 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Covenant Church on Fullwood Lane in Matthews.

Comments also are being accepted by email to project leader Sean Epperson at smepperson@ncdot.gov.
