The principal of Ardrey Kell High School has been reassigned to a new job in the district’s central office. Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools says David Switzer and the district agreed that a change in leadership at the school after 10 years is needed. His new role is executive director of Continuous Improvement and Logistics.
CMS suspended Switzer last month amid an investigation into complaints about racist incidents at the school. Thousands of people signed two competing petitions. One called for his resignation, saying he allowed bigoted behavior to be normalized. The other supported Switzer and praised his leadership.
Last August, Switzer apologized after he used the term “colored folks” during a staff meeting that was caught on video and leaked to the Charlotte Observer. Switzer told the paper he thought he had said “people of color.”
CMS officials say the reassignment comes with no change to Switzer's $144,739 annual salary.
