It’s been a violent start to 2019 in Charlotte. This weekend alone, three homicides occurred in the city. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department held a press conference Monday to provide some details into the ongoing investigations.
Although it’s too early in the year to see any trends such as common neighborhoods where this violence is occurring, Lieutenant Brad Koch says all 11 murders have one thing in common.
"Every single one of these 11 homicides this year has been at the result of gunfire and that is certainly no way to solve or come to any sort of resolution," Koch said. "Once you fire that gun you are responsible for whatever results happen from that."
This time last year there were 6 homicides in Charlotte compared to the current 11.
The most recent homicide occurred Sunday evening when a 36-year-old man was killed at a gas station in the University area. No arrests have been made.
Another homicide occurred Friday evening when a 63-year-old woman was shot in a car outside an apartment complex in the Derita-Statesville area. Another woman in the car was taken to the hospital. An arrest has been made in that case.
Also Friday, a 22-year-old man was shot in east Charlotte outside a convenience store, no arrests have been made.
