GOP Suspicious Of Voting Machines; Few Complaints In Mecklenburg

North Carolina Republican Party Chariman Tom Fetzer is crying foul on touchscreen voting machines in 36 counties, including Mecklenburg. He says votes intended for Republicans are being counted for Democrats. He says the party has received complaints from early voters in 12 counties, but assumes that similar machines in other counties have the same problems. Mecklenburg Board of Elections spokeswoman Kristin Mavromatis says her office has only received five complaints out of more than 36,000 early voting ballots that have been cast. She says two of them were from Democrats who say their straight-ticket ballots went for Republicans. The other three ballots were cast by voters trying to vote straight-ticket Republican or for a Republican candidate. Mavromatis says voters should not cast their ballot if they encounter similar problems on Election Day. "Immediately, if you feel the machine is not functioning the way you think it should, get a poll worker and inquire." As a precaution, Mavromatis says all the machines have been recalibrated at the precincts where those ballots were cast. She says there's nothing unusual about the number of voting machine complaints this election.
